HKUST is very grateful to have received a HK$500 million donation from Li Ka Shing Foundation (LKSF) on August 15, 2019 for establishing Hong Kong’s first Institute of Synthetic Biology (the Institute) to steer Hong Kong into a global pioneer in synthetic bio-technologies.
The Institute will integrate genetic engineering with artificial intelligence and relevant analysis methodologies. Through professional autonomous mechanisms, the Institute will bring about discoveries ranging from biomolecules to cells as well as actual products, thereby promoting public health, environmental sustainability and foster social advancement and co-sharing.
Thanks to LKSF’s generosity, the donation will help us get connected with the world in synthetic bio-technology research, and provide Hong Kong youngsters with abundant opportunities to engage in entrepreneurship and research work.
