2022 Maxim’s Group Top 10 Sustainability Highlights

Each bottle of BOB (Bottle of Bread) contains 25 grams of surplus bread donated by Maxim’s Group, and it is available in selected restaurants under the Group. Apart from empowering the development of local start-ups, part of the revenue is used to plant trees and support local tree planters, reduce food waste and drive a circular economy.

2. Regenerative agriculture pilot scheme
|
Maxim's Group collaborated with a local farm that practises regenerative agriculture to convert food wastes including fruit peels and fish bones, collected in Maxim’s factories and restaurants, into natural enzymes for farm soils. This pilot scheme enables the farm to adopt zero pesticides, regenerative farming to rejuvenilize the soil for achieving a more sustainability farming cycle with better carbon sequestration ability.

3. Source separation and collection of food waste
|
In 2022, a total of 29 restaurants of Maxim’s Group were recognized for their participation in the “EPD Pilot Scheme on Food Waste Collection” and the “ECF Source Separation and Collection of Food Waste for the Food & Beverage (F&B) Trade” jointly organized by the Environmental Protection Department and the Hong Kong Productivity Council. Maxim’s factories and plants have always been committed to delivering food waste to the Tai Po Sewage Treatment Works to sludge anaerobic co-digestion, which not only can reduce the landfill pressure, but also serves the purpose of turning “Waste-to-Energy”.

4. Upcycled uniforms and tablecloths
|
Various departments have started to introduce uniforms or utensils made with upcycled materials. For example, aprons of Arome are made with upcycled cotton and recycled plastics, while each of the tee-shirts of Maxim’s MX, the environment friendly tablecloths of COVA, as well as the new sustainable uniforms of the Japanese Chain Restaurants are made from upcycled plastic bottles. Each uniform uses the equivalent of 7 recycled plastic bottles. Fabrics for trousers of chefs of Peking Garden at Alexandra House are even made from 10 upcycled plastic bottles.

5. Increasing energy generated from photovoltaic systems
|
While the solar panels at factories in the mainland have started to generate energy, together with solar panels located at the Maxim’s Centre and three factories in Hong Kong, covering 9,300 square metres, 2 million kWh of renewable energy is generated annually.

6. Green Kitchens gained the top “Three-Leaf recognition”
|
The Green Kitchens of Thai Basil, wellwellwell and Uoharu located at Pacific Place and Shake Shack at Citigate have gained the top “Three-Leaf recognition” issued by the Swire Properties. Energy efficiency enhancement innovations adopted by the Group's coffee chain and logistic trucks have also been recognised as “Excellent” by the “Innovation Award” of the “2022 Smart Energy Award” organized by the CLP Hong Kong.

7. Starting the tree-planting plan in Asia
|
Part of the revenues from sales of BOB and dishes with Impossible Pork as ingredients will be used to support EcoMatcher, the innovative start-up using blockchain technology to plant trees in Asia. Up to Dec 2022, Maxim’s Group completed planting its first forest in Thailand, which benefits 6 farmer families, and the Group has been working on starting the second and the third forest.

8. Continuing the legacy of 10 years of voluntary work
|
2022 marks the 10th anniversary of the Maxim’s Volunteer Team. One of our young volunteers has joined his mother to serve since the age of 6. During the Volunteer Month in the winter of 2022, a total of 16 volunteer activities including bread run, gift packaging, mountain cleaning and upcycling workshop were hosted, accumulating more than 1,000 hours of volunteer service.

9. The first Sustainable Supply Chain Regional Conference
|
Going beyond the geographical limitations and time differences, the Sustainable Supply Chain Regional Conference was successfully held in September 2022. More than 100 strategic suppliers joined to share thoughts on the 3 key agenda topics including “Supply Chain Management under the New Normal”, “Innovation and Technology” and “Sustainability”.

10. Refreshing look of the group website
|
The sustainability logo and new website are officially launched, sharing the key initiatives delivered under the 5 pillars, namely “Let’s Taste”, “Let’s Reduce Waste”, “Let’s Reduce Plastic”, “Let’s Reduce Carbon”, and “Let’s Care” with a fresh look.
